My Non Toxic Beauty Care Routine
For many years now, I’ve been adjusting my beauty routine (along with the products I use in my home) to make them more natural, safe, and toxin-free. I finally feel like I’ve reached the point with my routine where I feel it is as natural as it can be, and the products that I buy come from companies that hold themselves to the highest standards possible. I’ve listed the different products I use on my body, face, hair, teeth, for makeup, and for my menstrual cycle & birth control. I've also posted links on each picture in case you'd like to purchase any of the products you see.
Twice a week I use a dry skin brush and exfoliate my entire body. It is usually recommended to do it more often, but this is what I personally have time for. Using a dry skin brush has many proven benefits such as it improves circulation, stimulates the lymphatic and nervous systems, reduces the appearance of cellulite, and helps shed dead skin cells.
I also use Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap by making a homemade body wash (recipe coming soon), or I use the bar soap when I’m not feeling up to making anything that week.
Once out of the shower, I use coconut oil as a moisturizer on my skin in the summer. For deeper skin conditioning in the winter, I slather raw shea butter all over my entire body.
For my face, I currently Nourish Organic’s moisturizing face wash, and I absolutely love it! It has cleared up my pores very noticeably and has taken away so much of the redness from my face. This is a recent change from making my own homemade face wash (recipe coming soon), and making it at home is something I will most likely go back to in the future to save money. But for now, I’m loving this face wash!
After washing my face, I slather on pure Argan oil as a moisturizer. I absolutely love using oil as a moisturizer as I can tend towards oily and dry skin. Argan oil has been prefect in keeping my skin quenched and has kept me from breaking out.
I also use activated charcoal and apple cider vinegar as a face mask from time to time. I feel that it really cleans out my pores and reduces any irritation I might be experiencing.
Tea tree oil is what I use as a spot treatment when I have a breakout.
I’ve tried time and time again to use homemade shampoo and conditioner, and each time my hair has turned out grungy, oily, and just plain nasty. Since my hairs leans more towards the oilier side, and I wash it almost every day (I know, so bad), I need something that cleans it well but that doesn’t leave it feeling like the Sahara desert. Step in 100% Pure products. Their shampoos and conditioners are absolutely AMAZING. No joke. They have phenomenal and extremely healthy products that actually work WONDERS. You can read more about the quality of their products and their philosophy here.
The only other product I use on my hair is a castor and rosemary oil blend to smooth out any frizzies (recipe coming soon). This blend works perfectly and leaves my hair shiny, not oily, and smooth.
Otherwise, I just let my hair dry naturally 99% of the time and my natural waves take over. I rarely ever straighten or curl my hair – honestly only on very special occasions.
As for my teeth, this is definitely an area I’ve struggled in. I’ve honestly rarely flossed my entire life and have been extremely lucky in not having any cavities or other dental issues. Recently though, I’ve taken on a full mouth routine to kick those bad habits for good. These products are pretty self-explanatory but I’ve chosen each of them for their quality and the benefits that they offer.
The toothbrush is BPA free and made of sustainable materials. The toothpaste is Ayurvedic and is the best that I’ve ever tried! I’ve also recently added in tongue scraping to my routine. You can check out the benefits of tongue scraping here.
I've also recently started oil pulling again with coconut oil. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic method of swishing oil around in your mouth, and it has endless amazing benefits such as helping with bad breath, whitening teeth, preventing cavities, and treating tooth decay. I’ll be writing a separate post on the process of oil pulling soon.
And on top of all of that, I started flossing! My mouth has never felt more clean!
For my beauty routine, I like it simplified. Most days when I’m home, I don’t put anything on. But when I do go out, I put on foundation, blush, lipstick, (all from 100% Pure), along with a mascara that I get from Well People. I love these toxin-free, fruit-pigmented makeup products and they work wonderfully!
I also use 100% Pure’s nail polish in the color Soufflé on my toes, and it is truly beautiful.
And that's it! (& it's still a lot of makeup for me personally.)
Birth Control & Menstrual Cycle
As for birth control, my husband and I have used the Fertility Awareness Method for several years (which we've recently started using in favor of conceiving). This is method where you track your cycle by monitoring your Basal Body Temperature (BBT) and cervical mucous daily to track when you will be ovulating. Then, you either do have sex on your fertile days if you are planning to conceive, or you use others forms of protection at this time (about 1 week per month). To track my entire cycle, I use the Kindara App, and it has worked perfectly for me for years now.
I couldn’t recommend this book about the Fertility Awareness Method more to get a great idea of what your body tells you about your fertility and health!
As for my menstrual cycle, I ditched the toxic tampons and pads (check out just how toxic here), and exclusively use the Diva Cup now. I am a fan for LIFE. Not only is the amount of waste I am producing cut down to almost 0, they are cleaner, more natural, and allow me to be more in tune with my own body. I highly recommend you give menstrual cups a try if you haven't already!
